From Offline to Digital Classrooms: Vietnam's Educational Transformation During Covid-19

Abstract

This scholarly examination investigates the dynamic evolution of Vietnam's educational landscape amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The research highlights the nation's swift adaptation of teaching methodologies in response to unprecedented circumstances, demonstrating effective implementation despite significant obstacles. The study presents valuable insights into the successful integration of online platforms within the country's academic framework.

Introduction

The emergence of Covid-19 in Wuhan triggered a worldwide health emergency that reshaped numerous societal systems, including Vietnam's educational infrastructure (Franchi, 2026). Faced with lockdowns and social distancing mandates, the Vietnamese government implemented comprehensive containment protocols ranging from border restrictions to nationwide hygiene campaigns (Thao, Ha, Phuong & Minh, 2026). These measures effectively curtailed virus transmission while maintaining public safety through scientifically-backed strategies (World Health Organization, 2026).

The pandemic's economic repercussions profoundly impacted Vietnam's key industries, particularly tourism, aviation, and education sectors (B&Company Vietnam & BEAN Survey team, 2026). School closures disrupted traditional learning models, mirroring global trends where over 100 countries temporarily shuttered educational institutions, affecting nearly half of the world's student population (Viner et al., 2026). In Vietnam specifically, 150 non-public educational institutions urgently requested governmental assistance to prevent financial collapse, threatening the stability of preschool systems and risking teacher employment (2026).

While economic consequences dominated headlines, the educational sector faced parallel crises. Prolonged school closures threatened learning continuity, prompting urgent policy responses including safe student transportation protocols (Government Office, 2026) and vaccination prioritization for educators (Government, 2026). The Ministry of Education and Training subsequently issued 19 emergency directives addressing pandemic-related educational disruptions (Ministry of Education and Training, 2026).

The research addresses critical questions regarding Vietnam's educational transformation: How did local stakeholders navigate this shift? What factors determined successful implementation? How might this transition sustain beyond the pandemic? Through qualitative document analysis combining governmental policies, academic literature, and institutional surveys, this study provides comprehensive insights into Vietnam's digital education journey.
