Skills Gap of Vietnamese Students in the Economy 4.0, Insights from Vietnam Business Case Competition 2026
May 31, 2026
The nation's higher education framework continues to grapple with the rapid evolution of the global landscape. Key issues highlighted in the Economy 4.0 era encompass: (1) The role of universities in cultivating either skilled professionals or innovative thinkers? (2) Current industry demands for specific competencies? (3) The extent to which Vietnamese students have developed essential interpersonal abilities? Addressing these matters is crucial for Vietnam's educational progression.
Within this context, the 2026 Vietnam Business Case Competition (VBCC)—an innovative academic contest challenging participants to tackle authentic problems in realistic scenarios for real businesses—provides valuable perspectives on the alignment between Vietnam's human capital supply and demand. A distinguished jury comprising experts from Cornell University alongside prominent corporations (Vincom Retail, Deloitte, One Mount Group) formulated eight evaluation criteria. These benchmarks reflect the industry's call for technical proficiency (research/analysis), interpersonal capabilities (presentation, Q&A), and emerging professional aptitudes (problem-solving, innovation, systems thinking). Notably, VBCC 2026 entrants demonstrated commendable technical and interpersonal skills yet require further development in problem-solving, creativity, and systems thinking (evidenced by comparative analysis of top three and top eleven teams among 299 participants).

Key Takeaway #1: Students excel in research/analysis
Judges at VBCC lauded the analytical strengths of top-performing teams (approximately 60% in top 11, 75% in top 3). Ms. Hoai Tran, Head of Project Management at Vincom Retail, remarked: "The depth of research and methodological rigor displayed by students exceeded expectations." Similarly, Mr. Khoa Luu, COO of One Mount Consumer, stated: "Students demonstrated exemplary research methodologies and analytical precision."
Key Takeaway #2: Strong interpersonal skills evident
Contrary to prevailing assumptions regarding insufficient interpersonal preparedness for professional environments, participants impressed judges with polished English presentations (up to 80% proficiency) and articulate Q&A responses (up to 70%). Ms. Dauphne Pham, New Venture Director at One Mount Real Estate, praised: "Their presentations showcased sophistication and confidence, coupled with compelling problem resolution during questioning."
Key Takeaway #3: Critical development needed in problem-solving and innovation
The jury concurred that significant improvements are required in strategic thinking, creative ideation, and implementation feasibility. Ms. Hoai Tran (Vincom Retail) observed: "While visionary concepts emerged, practical application pathways require refinement." Cornell University representatives Professors Doug Stayman and Jan A de Roos emphasized the necessity for stronger integration between conceptual frameworks and actionable strategies to drive meaningful transformation.
Findings from VBCC 2026 underscore Vietnamese students' potential to thrive in Economy 4.0 while highlighting persistent gaps requiring targeted interventions. Educational institutions should prioritize adopting globally recognized competency standards to bridge this critical divide.
